Learn about the different types of Liver Cancer
Finding out about liver cancer

The largest internal organ in the body, the liver lies under the right ribs, just beneath the right lung and diaphragm. The liver is shaped like a pyramid and is divided into right and left lobes. The liver receives blood from 2 sources, unlike most other organs. The hepatic artery supplies the liver with oxygen-rich blood, and the portal vein carries nutrient-rich blood from the intestines to the liver.
The liver processes and stores many of the nutrients absorbed from the intestine and also makes some of the clotting factors needed to stop bleeding from a cut or injury. The liver also secretes bile into the intestine to help absorb nutrients. Finally, the liver also plays an important part in removing toxic wastes from the body.
Since the liver is made up of many different types of cells, several types of tumors can form in the liver. Some tumors are cancerous and some are benign. Your treatment, health, and recovery depends on what kind of tumor you have.
Benign Tumors
Hemangioma, the most common type of benign liver tumor, starts in blood vessels. Since most of these tumors don’t cause symptoms, they do not need treatment.
Hepatic adenomas are benign tumors that develop from the main liver cells. Most of these tumors do not cause symptoms and do not need treatment. However, they may need to be removed if they cause stomach pain, a mass in the abdomen, or blood loss. Taking birth controls could increase the risk of getting these tumors in some women, although this is rare. Stopping the pills can cause the tumor to shrink. Men who use anabolic steroids may also develop these. The tumors shrink when the steroids are stopped.
Focal nodular hyperplasia, a tumor-like growth of several cell types, is benign. However, it can be hard to tell these tumors apart from true liver cancers.
Malignant Tumors
The most common form of malignant liver tumor in adults is called hepatocellular carcinoma. The tumor starts at the main type of liver cell, and this type of cancer could have different growth patterns. Some of these tumors start as a single tumor that grows larger.
Another type of liver cancer may begin in several spots throughout the liver without being confined to a single tumor. This is the most common pattern of liver cancer in the US and is often seen in people with cirrhosis of the liver.
Doctors may identify your specific type of liver cancer by examining tissue under a microscope.
Cholangiocarcinomas is another type of malignant liver cancer that starts in the bile ducts. Diagnosis for this type of cancer follow the same procedure as other forms of malignant cancer.
