Different types of Skin Rash
Symptoms of different kinds of skin rash
This article will outline a list of common causes of skin rash, including drug rashes, dermatitis, poison ivy,
and other causes.
Dermatitis
Dermatitis is characterized by skin that may be red, swollen, blistered, scabbed, scaly, oozing, or itchy.
Dermatitis, an inflammation of the skin, refers to a number of skin conditions that inflame the skin. Some types of
dermatitis are caused by allergies, while other types don’t have clear causes.
Drug Rashes
Drug rashes are caused by the body’s reaction to certain types of medication. The type of rash that occurs depends
on the type of drug that is causing it. Drug rashes might be caused by an allergic reaction to the medication, a
side effect of a medication, and hypersensitivity of sunlight caused by the medication.
Erythema Multiforme
This type of skin rash is a skin disorder characterized by red, raised skin areas all over the body. These patches
often look like targets, with dark circles and purplish grey centers. This disorder is often caused by the herpes
simplex virus. Other causes may include a reaction to a medication, other infectious diseases, and vaccines.
Symptoms of this skin rash include sudden, red patches and blisters, flat, round targets, itching, cold sores,
fatigue, joint pains, and fever.
Erythema nodosum
This skin rash is marked by tender, red bumps, usually found on the shins. Quite often, erythema nodosum is a sign
of some other disease or a negative reaction to a drug. Diseases that typically cause this skin rash include
streptococcal infections, leporosy, sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, ulcerative colitis, and other diseases. Drugs that
may cause this skin rash to erupt include bromides, antibiotics containing sulfa, isodides, and oral
contraceptives.
Symptoms of this skin rash include raised bruises on the shins, fever, joint pain, and enlarged lymph nodes.
Granuloma Annulare
Granuloma annulare is a skin condition marked by small, raised bumps that form a ring with a normal or sunken
center. The cause of this condition is unknown. Common symptoms include yellowish, skin-colored bumps and one or
several rings of bumps on feet, legs, or hands.
Poison Ivy
This skin rash is caused by an allergic skin reaction to a specific plant called poison ivy. Symptoms of poison ivy
include a rash marked by bumps and blisters that itch, swelling in the area of contact, and blisters that break
open, ooze, and crust.
Toxic epidermal necrolysis
This is a life-threatening skin disorder characterized by a blistering and peeling of the top layer of skin. This
disorder can be caused by a drug reaction such as penicillin, although one-third of all diagnosed cases of toxic
epidermal necrolysis are a result of unknown causes.
This condition often causes skin to peel off in sheets. The loss of skin causes fluids to ooze from the damaged
areas which can easily become infected. Other symptoms include peeling layers of skin, scalded-looking raw areas of
flesh, discomfort, fever, and the condition spreading to eyes, mouth, and genitals.
