Common home cures for snoring
Nine ways to cure that nocturnal racket
Do you snore? Or does your loved one snore? Either way, you’re not alone. Snoring affects 25 percent of women
and 40 percent of men, with elderly people being particularly prone to snoring.
Although it’s a fairly common problem, snoring can have serious medical (not to mention social) consequences if
left untreated. Try these home remedies below to help you-or your sleep partner-overcome a snoring problem.
Sleep on your side, not on your back. This is an old standby-you’re much more likely to snore when lying down on
your back. Sleeping on your stomach is also stressful to the neck. Sleep on your side to breathe easier.
Tennis Ball. Sew a pocket into the back of your pajama top and slip a tennis ball into it. This will keep you
from rolling onto your back during sleep. If you can’t sew, just put the tennis ball in a sock and use a safety pin
to close the sock and attach it to your pajama top.
Don’t drink alcohol or take tranquilizers. Taking sleeping pills or drinking alcohol depresses your central
nervous system and relaxes the muscles in your jaw and throat, which makes you more likely to snore. In addition,
these substances are also known to worsen a dangerous condition known as sleep apnea, which has been linked with
heart disease. Never, ever use the two together in combination. Discuss sleeping problems with your doctor instead
of self-medicating.
Lose a few pounds. Snoring can be exacerbated by excess body weight, which puts pressure on the airway, making
it more difficult for you to breathe.
Treat your allergies. Snoring can also be caused by chronic respiratory allergies, which force patients to
breathe through their mouths instead of their noses while they sleep. Take an antihistamine to prevent this. Or, if
your nose is congested, try an over-the-counter nose spray or humidifier.
Wear a mouth guard. An anti-snoring mouth guard prescribed by your dentist or doctor can keep your lower jaw
muscles from becoming too relaxed.
Quit smoking. Smoking can contribute to a variety of respiratory problems that make your snoring worse.
Get more sleep. Having a regular sleep schedule can help you feel well-rested, which in turn can help your
snoring.
If you are snoring while pregnant, see a doctor. Often, pregnant women will start snoring in their sleep.
Increased body weight and hormonal changes in the pregnancy might cause muscles to relax and cause snoring.
However, snoring during pregnancy might deprive your unborn baby of oxygen. Go see a doctor about this problem.
Raise your head. Sleeping while your head is raised on a pillow or cushion might make breathing easier by taking
pressure off of your airway. Also, try putting blocks under bed posts or propping your torso with pillows to
elevate your bed.
